France v GermanyToday, 12:00 PM Eastern • Quarter-finals • Estádio Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro
France and Germany have gone head to head quite a few times, some of those times were even football matches. These two have played their share of international friendlies, but have only played 3 competitive matches, all in the World Cup, with the last dating back to 1982.
France weren’t seen to be a threat to do well entering the World Cup, but a few good performances have changed that. They were slow to produce goals against Nigeria until the 79th minute, but considering Colombia were the only team in the knockout round to score their game winning goal earlier than France, that’s not a bad thing.
Germany needed two extra time goals to knock out Algeria, and while they looked strong in their first match against Portugal, they’ve struggled to come up with another strong result.
The entire knockout round has been a fight to the end, and I wouldn’t expect this one to be any different. It’ll be a drawn out slug fest, but I think France can produce the first real surprise of the knockout round and walk away with the win.
Prediction: France 2-1 Germany
